For once I have decided to put in all the effort instead of Bridget doing it all, with me taking the credit. So on 13th June 2026 Bridget will deliver me to the start point of a 26 mile trek in the Brecon Beacons, in Wales! This is a sponsored event in aid of Alzheimers UK organisation.

I always considered that when, and if, I reached my age I would probably be requiring assistance from Alzheimers UK rather than raising funds for them, but with good fortune this is what I am going to do. I would very much appreciate all the support that you can give me by clicking on the ‘gofundme’ link in the right-hand bar and giving whatever you feel appropriate.

As regular followers of Bridget’s adventures will know, we usually raise funds for childrens charities on our tours but, as this time we have swapped our roles in for the event, it occured to me that we should go to the other extreme in our choice of charity. It may also be an investment for the future.

The last time I went wandering in the Beacons was sixty years ago. It was during training in the army, to sharpen up our map reading skills (there were no GPS systems back then) and to hone our physical endurance. I believe that the Beacons won! So now at the grand old age of 79, and with all the various health issues people of such experience suffer, I decided walking 26 miles, up and down the mountains, would be an interesting challenge. I should add here, that the sponsorship is for attempting the challenge, not necessarily completing it!

Assuming I survive the trek, I am planning to do another run with Bridget starting around the end of July.

Hi Roy. Only look at your site every couple of months, as a lack of Bridget activity! Enjoy your one foot after the other hike..I assume you will be carrying a standard army 58kg pack? Honestly, have fun, and watch out for those strange speaking Welshmen.
No overseas trips for us this year, maybe Spain/Portugal next year??

Hello Gary, sorry for the tardy response, but been trying to prepare for the event. Really don’t know why I got into this. should know better at my age!

I currently have no planned trips this year, but that is normally the case. I will ‘up and go’ if the mood takes me. Let me know if you decide to visit Spain/Portugal next year, it’s well within range for meeting up.

Love to both you and Anita,

      Roy
